Airborne pathfinders utilized a portable homing beacon called the PPN-2 Eureka during parachute drops during US WWII. Pathfinders were the first forces from the Allies to jump behind enemy lines. They would put up lights like the Eureka to help the main group of paratroopers find the drop zone.
The British and Americans worked together to make the Eureka signal and the Rebecca receiver, which worked well together.
